5 ways to get a promotion through daily work and small victories

Fast Company has published a collection of tips on how to get your work noticed and promoted. We chose the main thing.

What happened

According to a study, 37% of employees do not receive positive feedback from their employer, which often leads to to exhaustion, frustration, decreased motivation and even to dismissal. This is especially true of “invisible work”—tasks that are necessary for the team's success, but not always considered important by management.

Here are five ways to turn those “invisible tasks” and small victories into strong arguments for the next promotion:

  • Understand the requirements of the new position. Before asking for a promotion, read the job description and talk to people who are already in the position. This will help you understand what skills and experience are needed. Make a plan to develop the skills you need and use it to advance your career.
  • It is important to record your achievements. Set reminders to record them weekly or monthly. Be specific: Include details of tasks, dates and deliverables. For example, write that you created a new process that reduced the time to complete a task and thus the company was able to attract new customers.
  • Tell about your achievements. Prepare a short list of your achievements before meeting with the manager. Tell how your successes have helped the team and the company.
  • In order to be noticed, you need to be active in the company. Participate in projects or initiatives that will allow you to express yourself. Develop relationships with colleagues from other departments and share your experience with junior team members.
  • Share your career goals with your manager. Explain why you are ready for the promotion and provide examples of your results. This will help you get feedback and understand what you still need to do to reach your goals. Track your progress regularly to be ready for a promotion at any time.
