There are products that really make you want to do something good for yourself and your figure.
However, at some point, you start to wonder: why am I not really full, do I constantly feel cravings, and where did the extra pounds suddenly come from, even though I really wanted to lose weight?
Most often, this happens due to insidious weight loss traps. This refers to foods that do not fill you up, but rather encourage you to eat more than you really need. Fortunately, there are healthy alternatives.
Fruit juices – try unsweetened smoothies
Juice is a classic weight loss trap: due to its high vitamin content, it is considered beneficial.
However, few people know that it also provides a lot of calories due to its high fructose content. During the production process, most of the pulp is removed from the juice.
“The remaining fructose ensures the activity of the appetite center in the brain and negatively affects the blood sugar level. Juice does not cause a feeling of satiety, but rather can cause food cravings.”
Smoothies are a good alternative to fruit juice, provided that you do not add sweets to it.
No soft drinks – drink water instead
People who want to lose weight often rely on soft drinks to save on the high calorie content (about 40 calories per 100 milliliters) of a regular soft drink. But experts are convinced that low-calorie lemonades are not suitable for dieting.
“Soft drinks are especially difficult because the sweetener they contain tricks the brain into thinking it is getting sugar. The level of insulin increases, but the expected sugar does not arrive,” says the nutritionist.
The need for satiety remains unsatisfied and the next craving does not force itself to wait.
To avoid this, it is better to treat yourself to a glass of real lemonade from time to time. The best thirst quencher is, of course, water – often “infused”, that is, mixed with fruit, cucumbers, etc., or even unsweetened tea.
Coffee – if you want to lose weight, drink it black
Coffee is considered a real fat killer because the caffeine it contains speeds up metabolism and fat burning. This is partly true. But this only applies to black coffee. As soon as sugar, milk, etc. are added, the slimming effect ceases to be effective.
“If you want to reduce body fat, it is best to drink black coffee. You should avoid thick milk foam, syrup, cocoa powder, etc. Especially cold coffee drinks are real calorie bombs.”
Muesli – it is better to mix it yourself
Unfortunately, anyone who thinks that they are doing something good for themselves with muesli is usually mistaken. Ready-made products from the supermarket contain a lot of sugar.
“They also contain short-chain carbohydrates, which cause blood sugar levels to fluctuate. For this reason, the feeling of fullness after breakfast does not last long, and you soon start snacking.”
Ideally, you should make your own muesli mix – for example, with whole grain cereals, nuts, fresh fruit such as berries, yoghurt, milk or a plant-based drink. This way you can be sure that breakfast does not start with a sugar bomb.
Muesli bars: nuts are a good alternative
The sugar trap also applies to granola bars from the supermarket: despite the marketing promises that adorn the packaging, the bars are often high in sugar and calories for a relatively small snack.
“Instead, a handful of nuts or a piece of fruit is a good snack – preferably with cheese or skim or low-fat cottage cheese.”
You can also easily bake your own granola bars to satisfy your hunger between meals.
Glutamate: Found in Many Prepared Meals
Glutamate refers to esters and salts of glutamic acid and is found in many foods: be it Asian snacks, ready-made and frozen meals, as well as seasonings and salad dressings.
By the way, prepared salads often contain a lot of fat in the form of dressings and cheese, as well as bacteria and microbes. So if you think that a salad from the refrigerator shelf is the best way to support your weight loss goals, you may be mistaken.
“Glutamate is able to prevent the production of the satiety hormone leptin and thereby overcome the hunger barrier in the brain. Glutamate manipulates the brain and makes people eat more than they need. That’s why many of us have such a hard time stopping after eating a handful of chips containing glutamate.”
In addition to glutamate, our sense of satiety is negatively affected by preservatives, sugar, flavorings, and other flavor enhancers. The best way to avoid this is to cook your own food instead of using ready-made meals.
