High cholesterol levels threaten serious problems with the cardiovascular system. However, walnuts not only help control this indicator, but also improve it.
Cholesterol is a molecule that is present in our bloodstream. It is necessary for the creation of healthy cells, but high cholesterol increases the risk of heart and vascular diseases.
Due to high cholesterol levels, fatty deposits form in the vessels, blood pressure increases, which increases the risk of serious diseases, including heart attacks and strokes.
More and more scientific data indicate the ability of walnuts to protect against heart disease due to their high content of Omega-3 fatty acids. Active consumption of walnuts is associated with low morbidity and mortality from atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease and arrhythmia.
Spanish scientists from the Barcelona Clinic recently proved that half a cup of walnuts per day reduces cholesterol levels by approximately 8.5%, which reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
This conclusion was made on the basis of a study involving 628 adults, half of whom additionally received walnuts in their diet. This group also had a modest reduction in low-density lipoprotein, or “bad,” cholesterol levels after two years.
