Regular vigorous walking helps maintain heart health and reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, said Stacey Stevenson, MD, head of the functional medicine department at the Cancer Treatment Centers. In an interview, she called regular walks a great way to lose weight and prevent certain diseases.
According to the doctor, walking is the optimal exercise for improving the work of the cardiovascular system. In addition, in combination with proper nutrition, this type of physical activity will help to gently get rid of extra pounds.
Regular walking reduces the risk of stroke, cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes, normalizes cholesterol levels, normalizes blood pressure, strengthens bones and muscles.
Stevenson noted that regular walking helps to form other useful habits. “A person who regularly goes on a health walk, monitors their menu, controls their sleep schedule to achieve success in losing weight and improving their health,” the doctor commented.
The doctor recommends taking at least ten thousand steps a day and regularly engaging in moderate physical activity for an hour. If you do not actively move for two or more days, everything you did before loses its meaning. Regularity is the key to success.
At the same time, the expert emphasized that walks and walking should be considered only as a supplement to the main efforts to lose weight. In her opinion, quality sleep, proper nutrition and reducing stress levels play a more important role.
If a person seriously decides to burn calories while walking, they should gradually increase the load, Stevens noted. “Whether you're going for an invigorating morning walk, stepping on a treadmill during the workday, or enjoying a walk after dinner, you need to increase your intensity gradually,” the doctor concluded.
