An extra slice of bacon increases the risk of cancer by 20%

It is recommended to eat no more than 70 grams of processed meat per day. A slice of bacon eaten in addition to this amount can significantly increase the risk of cancer.

A group of scientists led by specialists from the University of Oxford came to the conclusion that even a very small amount of processed meat products that a person consumes above the norm increases the susceptibility to cancer.

The authors of the project observed changes in the health of 500 thousand people who consumed different amounts of meat for six years. During the study, more than 2.6 thousand participants developed colon cancer. Scientists analyzed the correlation between the risk of this disease and the characteristics of people's diets.

According to the recommendations of the National Health Service of England, no more than 70 grams of processed meat should be consumed daily. Experts stated that people who eat this product daily in an amount exceeding this limit had an increased risk of developing colon cancer. And, as it turned out, even a slight abuse can cause a similar effect – literally an extra slice of bacon.

“Those who consume an average of 76 grams of red and processed meat per day have a higher risk of developing cancer than those who consume 21 grams. Daily consumption of more than 70 grams of meat makes the risk of developing colon cancer 20% more significant,” the experts concluded.
