The lack of any vitamin or mineral in the body always manifests itself in the form of health problems. Most people suffer from iron deficiency because they do not receive enough of it with food. Serious symptoms indicate its deficiency in the body.
The first sign of iron deficiency is fatigue. It appears if there is not enough of it to produce hemoglobin, a protein responsible for transporting oxygen throughout the body. As a result, the body lacks energy.
With iron deficiency, nails become brittle and the skin becomes pale. In addition, inflammation of the tongue (glossitis) can be a symptom of its deficiency due to a decrease in the level of the protein myoglobin, which is necessary for muscle health.
A serious sign of iron deficiency in children and adults is low cognitive abilities. Schoolchildren who lack this mineral have a harder time keeping up. Adults who experience iron deficiency have problems with memory and performance.
Eating foods containing it will help avoid iron deficiency. The recommended daily dose of iron for men is 8 mg, for women – 18 mg. Its plant sources are nuts, vegetables, fruits, legumes and cereals. Animal foods rich in iron are also beef, fish, chicken.
