Does baking soda really help with heartburn: a doctor's opinion

A neurologist commented on the effect of taking baking soda during heartburn and called it dangerous as a result.

In his interview, the doctor explained that baking soda is actually used in the treatment of certain diseases – for example, kidney or cancer. But baking soda as a medicine is known primarily as an improvised remedy that can help with heartburn.

But the doctor emphasized: you should not use baking soda to eliminate the unpleasant symptoms of heartburn.

“It is actually not recommended to use baking soda as a remedy for heartburn. When absorbed, it affects electrolyte metabolism, and due to the formation of carbon dioxide, after a while it causes even more active secretion of gastric juice, in particular hydrochloric acid,” the doctor said.

The doctor added that the home-grown use of soda in the form of some kind of medicinal product can lead to the fact that the mucous membranes will suffer due to an excessively aggressive alkaline environment or the normal microflora of the skin will be disturbed (if soda is used for its treatment). The specialist called the possible consequences of the thoughtless use of soda a predisposition to gastritis or stomach ulcers, burns of the mucous membrane of the esophagus and stomach.
