Experts told what will happen if you drink a lot of water

We often we hear and read about the importance of maintaining water balance in the body. Water makes the skin smoother and helps to prevent aging, accelerates the digestion process, helps the body get rid of toxins and adjusts many processes necessary for the health of the body. Every day we lose water through breathing, sweating and other life processes. In order for our body to function properly, we must replenish its water reserves by consuming drinks and foods that contain water. But measure is needed in everything, so even such a harmless product as pure water can harm the body if you drink too much of it.

What happens if you drink too much water

Drinking too much water can cause sodium levels in the blood to drop. This mineral maintains the balance between fluid inside and outside cells. When the sodium concentration drops below normal, water moves out and causes the cells to swell. It can cause headache and nausea, and in some cases lead to brain swelling and coma. This condition is called hyperhydration or water poisoning.

However, you should not be afraid. To get water poisoning, you need to drink at least 4 liters of liquid in a short period of time. It's a lot harder than you might think because our bodies are pretty smart and will start excreting even a small excess of water.

How Much Water Should You Drink Every Day

National Academy of Sciences, Engineering, and The US Department of Medicine has determined that adequate daily fluid intake is about 3.7 liters per day for men and 2.7 liters for women. These recommendations apply to water, other beverages and food. About 20% of the daily fluid intake usually comes from food, the rest from drinks.

You can tell if you are drinking enough water by the following factors: you rarely feel thirsty and your urine is colorless or light yellow. To prevent dehydration and make sure your body has the fluids it needs, make water your favorite drink. Try to drink a glass of water before and between each meal, as well as before, during and after exercise.
