Experts told which foods should not be stored in the refrigerator

A large amount of products is thrown away due to improper storage, as experts from the Australian waste management company Amanda Kane told us. Experts also said that it is better not to keep them in the refrigerator.

Potatoes, onions and garlic should always be stored outside the refrigerator, as they feel much better in a dark place that is not cooled. The practice of cooling tomatoes below 12 degrees Celsius limits their ability to generate substances that contribute to the emergence of aroma and taste. Avocados should also not be left in the fridge, only the flesh can be stored there after the product has been cut, but it is important to keep the fruit out of the air so that it does not turn brown.

A range of fruits, including apples, pears and kiwi, are best stored outside the fridge, which can also help other products stay fresher for longer. This is because all fruits and vegetables emit a natural ripening gas called ethylene. The latter can affect the ripening rate of other fruits and vegetables around them.

Storing in the fridge affects the taste of tropical fruits, which also emit high levels of ethylene. Mangoes and pineapples should only be stored in a cool place after they have been cut.
