Five health problems that commonly occur after age 50

The World Health Organization claims that most people in the world can now expect to live to at least 60 years. At the same time, by 2030, one in six people will be 60 years old or older. In this regard, the number of health problems will increase.

Certain diseases, says Dr. Renuka Tipirneni, an internist and assistant professor of general medicine at the University of Michigan, are more common in people over the age of 50. But the likelihood of developing these diseases generally depends on a number of factors, including lifestyle, genetics, race, ethnicity, and more.

Here are five of the most common health problems that occur in your 50s.

High blood pressure. Hypertension is considered a leading cause of stroke, heart attack, kidney disease, and other conditions that can lead to death. Experts at the Mayo Clinic recommend that people in their 40s have their blood pressure checked at least once a year.

High cholesterol. If nothing is done about it, a person may develop atherosclerosis and blockage of blood vessels. This blockage increases the risk of heart problems, peripheral vascular disease, cognitive impairment, and other organ damage.

Arthritis. Approximately 52% of people over the age of 85 suffer from this disease. Most often it occurs in women. Obesity is considered a risk factor for the development of osteoarthritis.

Diabetes. The likelihood of developing diabetes increases as a person ages and becomes overweight. Diabetes is also associated with various complications: peripheral neuropathy, peripheral artery disease, which causes foot ulcers. This can lead to leg amputation.

Osteoporosis. Bone density decreases as a result of aging. Moreover, in women, due to menopause, this usually happens after the age of 50. A study published in Frontiers in Public Health found that osteoporosis is associated with a higher incidence of bone fractures.
