Some of them received a daily supplement of vitamin D3 in a high dosage of 2000 IU, others were given a placebo. Overweight or obese women in both groups were also offered an exercise program in addition to a low-calorie diet.

As a result, the researchers found a link between vitamin D and greater weight loss. It turned out that participants whose vitamin levels normalized lost weight faster than those who took a placebo.

Vitamin D may play a direct role in suppressing the parathyroid hormone, which triggers the accumulation of fat in the body, the associate professor suggested.
