How to maintain eye health with nutrition

Eye health is affected by many different factors ranging from lifestyle and age to various diseases. The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) has given some advice on how you can use food to improve eye health.
According to some research, a healthy diet can reduce the risk of developing diseases eyes, although this connection is not as strong as, for example, in the case of heart disease, says the organization's website. “However, a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables can help keep your eyes as healthy as possible,” experts add.
A diet based on foods that are rich in protein, such as meat, fish and legumes, dairy products and not too much fat. At the same time, a poor diet that leads to weight gain is harmful to eye health.
“Some complications of being overweight can cause vision problems. These include retinal vessel occlusions, diabetic eye problems, and eye diseases associated with stroke,” the experts explain.
Among the products most beneficial for eye health, the Kraff Eye Institute singled out:
- fatty fish;
- nuts (especially almonds and hazelnuts);
- citrus (lemon, lime, grapefruit and orange);
- leafy greens;
- eggs;
- beef;
- legumes (especially lentils).
