However, excessively rapid weight loss can harm health, primarily the liver. A gastroenterologist told how to lose weight and keep a healthy liver at the same time.
During a sharp weight loss due to a diet or starvation, adipose tissue does not simply disappear from the body – the fat from the cells enters the liver, the doctor said. If this process happens too quickly, fat begins to accumulate in the liver.
In such situations, a person loses weight, the weight decreases, but the liver suffers. Even the development of cirrhosis is not excluded, the doctor warned.
In order to avoid such consequences, the doctor recommended to start saving from excess weight with an examination, and then to be observed by specialists during weight loss. The physiological rate of weight loss is considered to be no more than four kilograms per month, the doctor said. With such an indicator, the liver can process and remove fat without overloading.
