How to relieve eye strain from frequent computer work

Computer vision syndrome is the human body's reaction to prolonged work at a computer. It is not considered a disease, but it can cause unpleasant sensations in the eyes.

According to the Cleveland Clinic, people who work a lot on a computer experience blurred vision, burning or stinging in the eyes, sensitivity to light, headaches, back and neck pain. Doctors told how to avoid these unpleasant symptoms.

Adjust the viewing angle

The viewing angle plays a big role when working on a computer. To reduce eye strain, the center of the monitor, tablet or phone should be 51-71 cm from the eyes and 10-12 cm below their level.

Reduce glare

The letters on the screen are not as clear as the letters on the printed page. Too little contrast between the letters and the background or glare on the screen makes the eyes strain more. As a result, sensitivity to light increases. Experts recommend that you position your screen to avoid glare from overhead lights or windows.

Use the 20-20-20 rule

When using a computer or smartphone for a long period of time, you need to take regular breaks. There is a rule for this: 20-20-20. Every 20 minutes, look away from the computer and look at something 20 feet (6-7 meters) away for 20 seconds. This will give your eyes a chance to refocus.

Blink more often

Usually, people blink about 18 times per minute, but computer users tend to blink less often. This increases the likelihood of developing dry eye syndrome. Therefore, you should be mindful of your blinking frequency.

Limit screen time

It is very important to limit the time spent in front of the screen. In addition, using a laptop or phone before going to bed not only worsens the condition of your eyes, but also interferes with sleep. The brain does not have a chance to slow down, which makes it difficult to get a full night's rest. Therefore, it is recommended to gradually reduce screen time before bedtime.

Check with a doctor

Even if a person does not need glasses or contact lenses for everyday activities, they may be needed for working at a computer or other device. In addition, check-ups with an ophthalmologist will help prevent the development of various diseases or detect them in their early stages.
