How to store bananas so they don't turn brown

We share useful life hacks that will help keep bananas fresh and tasty longer.

Many people are familiar with the problem of bananas quickly turning black and soft (even if you bought them green). To keep your favorite fruit edible for as long as possible, there are several effective and simple life hacks that we hasten to share.

Store bananas separately from other fruits

Many fruits and vegetables emit ethylene, a harmful gas that contributes to the rapid decomposition of neighboring products. And bananas are especially sensitive to ethylene. Therefore, it is better to keep them away from other plant products (read also: Dangerous neighborhood: products that cannot be stored together (did you know?)).

Hang them

Today, you can find a special banana hanger in online stores. It is better to buy one and store bananas on it, so they will stay yellow longer.

Put bananas in the refrigerator

Low temperature slows down the chemical ripening process. Therefore, it is better to keep ripe bananas in the refrigerator. True, their skin will also turn brown quite quickly there, but inside they will retain a pleasant taste and elastic texture.

Sprinkle bananas with lemon juice.

If you need to preserve the freshness of already peeled bananas, sprinkle them with lemon or lime juice. Citrus fruits are known to slow down oxidation processes, which is why bananas will retain their flavor and texture longer.

Freeze bananas

Even if you apply all the life hacks listed above, fresh bananas still won't be able to maintain their original appearance for more than a week. If that's not enough for you, it's better to freeze them. In the freezer, the shelf life of bananas will increase to a month. This is especially important if you need the fruit for baking and desserts, smoothies, or homemade ice cream.
