Liver disease has hit non-drinkers. And there's only one reason for it

More and more people are suffering from serious liver problems, even though they don't abuse alcoholic beverages in their lives – the reason for this is obesity.

52-year-old digital project manager Alison Johnson told her story about this.

It is noted that when the woman started having liver problems, doctors assumed that she was a heavy drinker, however, she drank no more than 1-2 bottles of beer a week, in while the cause of the disease was excess weight.

At 170 centimeters tall, Alison weighed almost 110 kilograms, and doctors determined that if she did not lose weight, she would die in a couple of years.

The blame for everything is the so-called non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is increasingly common with the growing number of people suffering from obesity.

With excess weight, fat is deposited not only under the skin, but also around the organs, inside them. When fat cells accumulate in the liver, inflammation can begin and even scarring can appear.

The inflammation is called “non-alcoholic steatohepatitis”, it develops in one in four people with NAFLD, which can eventually lead to liver failure and even cancer.
