Named a drink that is dangerous for heart rhythm

According to the results of a new study, lovers of this drink may face such a problem as cardiac arrhythmia. Its excessive use is especially dangerous – it can immediately affect the frequency of your heartbeat.

Coffee can charge us with vigor and energy so that we can better cope with everyday tasks. However, it turns out that this drink can also have a negative effect on our body. According to the results of the study, which were recently presented at the scientific sessions of the American Heart Association (American Heart Association), coffee lovers may face such a problem as cardiac arrhythmia if they consume excessive amounts of this drink.

As part of this study (which was partially funded by the Department of Cardiology at the University of California, San Francisco), scientists monitored 100 volunteers, whose average age was 38.

When the participants drank more than one cup of coffee, electrocardiographs that monitor heart rate and which the volunteers had to wear recorded a two-fold increase-a 54% increase in premature ventricular contractions originating from the lower parts of the heart.

“Coffee is the most common drink in the world, but its impact on human health remains ambiguous,” said Gregory Marcus, a physician, one of the authors of this study, deputy head of research and professor emeritus at the University of California, San Francisco. -Francisco Markus explained that, although “most long-term observational studies point to the many beneficial properties of coffee, our work was the first randomized study that aimed to examine the physiological effects of coffee consumption in real time.”

The results of this study clearly suggest that coffee has an immediate, yet temporary, effect on your heart rate.

In an interview, Dr. Jim Liu, a cardiologist at the Wexner Medical Center (Wexner Medical Center) at Ohio State University, said: “As a stimulant, caffeine can have short-term effects on your heart, including raising your blood pressure and increasing your heart rate.”

However, according to according to Dr. Liu, although “regular caffeine consumption may cause a small increase in blood pressure, caffeine has not been shown to have serious long-term adverse effects on cardiovascular health when consumed in small to moderate doses.”

Thus, the main secret is moderation. What should you do if you feel that your heart beats faster after drinking coffee? Dr. Liu replied, “I think it would be helpful to consult a doctor and find out the possible causes of the arrhythmia, especially if the irregular heartbeat attacks are frequent and cause you concern.”
