< b> According to the new spelling, the patronymic, which is formed from the name of Igor, should be written differently. There was confusion with this before, so let's explain it correctly. Previously, the correct option was Igorovych, because male patronymic names have the suffix -ovych in the Ukrainian language. The form Igorevich was and remains erroneous.

How to write the patronymic in Ukrainian

To form a patronymic from a male name, you need to add the suffix -ovych. For female patronymics, the suffixes -ivna or -ivna are added.

For example:

• Andriy — Andriyevich/Andriivna
• Pavlo — Pavlovich/Pavlivna
• Bogdan – Bogdanovych/Bogdanivna

However, there are exceptions: for example, the name Luka forms the patronymic as Lukich for men and Onion for women. It is also worth noting that some old Ukrainian names may have non-standard patronymic forms, especially in artistic or historical texts.

The new Ukrainian spelling is an updated edition of the Ukrainian spelling, which was approved by the Cabinet Ministers of Ukraine in 2019. Updates in spelling were the result of the work of a special commission that sought to modernize the Ukrainian language and bring it closer to the traditions lost in the 20th century, taking into account modern usage.
