Nutritionists told why you shouldn't eat honey instead of sugar

Nutritionists from the British non-profit organization Action on Sugar analyzed various sweeteners, manufacturers of which position their products as healthy, and came to the conclusion that in most cases this is a marketing ploy. In particular, experts managed to prove that honey cannot be used instead of sugar.

As stated in the report of the team of nutritionists, they conducted an analysis of more than 200 products offered in British stores. The list included honey, various syrups, including maple and agave, and sugar, which are positioned as healthy. During the study of the samples, it was found that honey contains up to 86% free sugars, and maple syrup – up to 88. Free sugars include all monosaccharides and disaccharides. These are sweeteners that are added to food. These include fructose, sucrose and glucose. As it turned out, adding a 7-gram spoonful of honey to tea gives a person 6 grams of such free sugars.

According to the authors of the study, consumers often add honey to food and drinks instead of sugar, considering it more beneficial for health. At the same time, they do not follow the measures, and finished products contain a large amount of sugar. The daily norm of honey, sugar and other sweeteners should not exceed 30 grams. Buyers are misled by marketing promises, as well as statements by bloggers and chefs. At the same time, consumers do not really understand what the concept of “free sugars” means and what danger they conceal. Meanwhile, they pose a serious threat to health.

As a result, a person receives a larger number of calories, which can lead to obesity, type 2 diabetes, dental and liver diseases and even some types of oncology. Nutritionists say that it is not worth getting carried away with sweeteners, as well as sugar, even if manufacturers position them as healthier.
