Plant products contain many useful nutrients, therefore, they bring health benefits to the body. A Spanish study shows that some products can even reduce the risk of breast cancer.
There are many different ways to reduce the risk of developing certain diseases at an early stage.
“As research by Spanish scientists shows, regular consumption of coffee, fruits and vegetables can also have such a positive effect and even help reduce the risk of breast cancer,” says an oncologist.
The effect of phenolic acid on breast cancer
In the study, scientists examined the link between phenolic acid and breast cancer in 11,028 women.
Phenolic acid is a compound found in a variety of plant foods, including whole grains, blueberries, citrus fruits, oats, and rice.
All subjects were surveyed about their phenolic acid intake for a total of twelve years. During that time, the researchers found 101 cases of breast cancer among the subjects.
To determine how much phenolic acid they consumed, the women answered questions about how often they ate 136 different foods. The researchers then compared this information with a database containing information about the phenolic acid content of each individual food.
Many foods may prevent breast cancer
Researchers have found that many foods may protect against the risk of developing postmenopausal breast cancer due to the ingredients they contain.
“Women who consume the highest amounts of hydroxycinnamic acid (a natural form of phenolic acid) are 62 percent less likely to suffer from breast cancer than those who consume the lowest amounts,” the oncologist comments on the study.
Among the different types of hydroxycinnamic acids, chlorogenic acids in particular have been shown to be the most effective in reducing risk. They are abundant in fruits and vegetables, as well as in coffee.
“Eating a healthy plant-based diet can be beneficial not only for your figure, but also for your overall health.”
Other nutritional tips for cancer prevention

“At the same time, try to limit your intake of processed and fried foods, unhealthy fats, sugar, and refined carbohydrates,” advises the oncologist.
