Psychologists explained why we smile when we receive bad news

Many people have noticed in real life or in the movies that when people receive bad news, for some reason they smile crookedly at first. Psychologists know why this happens, so you can find out what the reason for this behavior is.
What you need to know about smiling
There are almost twenty types of smiles. Of these, only six indicate the experience of positive emotions. This suggests that there is nothing strange in the fact that sometimes we smile when there is no reason for this. The main question is why we smile if we are sad or offended.
For example, those who feel very strong embarrassment, an extremely aggressive form of hatred, hostility can smile. A sincere, kind and positive smile can be easily “diagnosed” by observing facial wrinkles in the eye area. If the eyes “smile”, then the person is doing it as sincerely as possible. It is very difficult to fake such a smile – the eyes will still not be pleasant enough. If you don't see the work of the muscles near the eyes in the upper part of the cheeks, then the person is pretending and deliberately stretching a smile.
Many people smile on purpose to appear friendly, and in some cultures, smiling without emotion is the norm. For example, in the West, people often smile at each other. It's a habit for them.
Why do we smile when we feel bad
It's quite simple – we want to hide our emotions. For example, fear. Fear is one of the basic basic feelings that we cannot control. A frightened person often smiles, so if you put psychological pressure on someone and he or she smiles in return, it means that you have achieved the desired effect. It is worth being wary of people who, in situations filled with negativity, remain with a stony face.
The smile of misfortune
It appears on our face when, for example, we receive an undeservedly small salary. For example, if one of the employees followed the plan and did everything as well as possible, but then because of some small thing he was deprived of the bonus, then such a smile may appear on his face. It can be distinguished by some “curve”. At the same time, the eyes do not “laugh”, and the smile itself is crooked, skewed and asymmetrical. In this case, we smile with one side of our face more than the other.
Also, studies show that most of us start to smile much more often in the presence of someone who is more successful, richer or stronger than us. In this case, our smile shows humility. If someone below you in position smiles a lot in your presence, it shows respect.
Smile of contempt
It is not fake. Don't think that people who feel genuine disgust and contempt smile fakely to tease you. It comes to them completely automatically. With such a smile, the corners of the lips seem to look down, and the eyes narrow slightly, as if the person is in a playful state and mood.
Smile of malice
If a person is openly scornful, then they smile with their mouth slightly open, and their eyes are filled with undisguised aggression. Quite often, even we ourselves express malice, we simply don't notice it, because this smile appears imperceptibly.
With these smiles, our body seems to show its unwillingness to accept this or that emotion. That is why when someone learns bad news, they initially smile weakly, as if it is not true. Only after this does the smile “smooth out,” and in its place comes pain and despair.
It is necessary to understand that such a “bitter” smile of regret appears completely unconsciously, so you should not think that the person who did it is out of his mind. This is the norm.
