The tropical fruit, scientifically known as Tamarindus indica, grows on trees in tropical regions of Africa. Tamarind hides in pods with a long brown shell.
It is in these pods that you can find the sticky, fleshy and juicy pulp of tamarind fruits. The fruit has an unusual taste, which can vary from sweet to sour and tart to spicy. Many note that its taste resembles a date combined with lemon.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), raw tamarind contains many useful substances. Among them:

• Phosphorus;
• Potassium;
• magnesium;
• Sodium;

• vitamin C;
• Vitamin K;
• Zinc.
Helps in weight loss
One study found that tamarind water extract may help prevent obesity. Tamarind contains unique compounds called trypsin inhibitors that can help reduce hunger. This protein is able to suppress appetite by increasing the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Although research into this potential benefit is still ongoing, experts hope that extracts from this fruit could soon be used as a natural weight loss supplement.

Tamarind is able to inhibit the enzyme alpha-amylase, which helps stop the absorption of carbohydrates in the body. Scientists suggest that regular consumption of the superfruit can help control blood sugar fluctuations.

In another study, scientists found that tamarind can reduce the level of LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. This fruit contains dietary fiber that can help clear veins and arteries of excess LDL cholesterol.
