In an attempt to understand the nature of insomnia, scientists from the Free University of Amsterdam conducted the world's first study involving more than a million people. Before that, the most massive project was considered to be a project involving 700,000 people.
Dutch experts studied DNA samples taken from 1.3 million people – nothing like this has ever been done before. As a result of this investigation, they discovered that genes prevent modern people from sleeping normally. In total, scientists were able to identify 956 genes that “conduct” insomnia.
Insomnia is one of the most widespread health disorders that modern people face. According to researchers, almost 30 percent of the Earth's population suffers from it. Genetic prerequisites for the development of insomnia, experts note, can make a person prone not only to problems with normal sleep – depression, neuroses, and anxiety can also occur.
In addition, it turned out that insomnia is closely related to a decrease in life expectancy, as well as a deterioration in cognitive abilities: people who suffer from insomnia perceive new information worse.
Earlier, Australian physiologist Rick Hay published recommendations for people who suffer from difficulties falling asleep and getting a good night's rest. The expert called chamomile tea one of the best remedies that help to sleep normally at night.
