Stress at work and sleep disturbances increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease by three times in people with hypertension.
This is stated in a new study by scientists from the Technical University of Munich.
“Sleep should be a time for rest, relaxation and energy recovery. If you are prone to stress at work, sleep helps you recover. Unfortunately, poor sleep and stress at work often go hand in hand, and hypertension further exacerbates this effect,” warned the study’s lead author, Professor Karl-Heinz Ledwig.
The scientists noted that stress at work and poor sleep over many years lead to a loss of energy and can lead to early death.
Ledwig added that the study results suggest that doctors should ask patients whether they are experiencing stress at work and whether they are sleeping well. Employers, in his opinion, should provide help in overcoming stress at work and treating insomnia, especially for staff with chronic diseases such as hypertension.
