The color of nasal mucus “tells” when to see a doctor

Nasal mucus is a reflection of whether the immune system is in order.

The color of nasal mucus allows you to obtain certain health information – it “indicates” how serious a person's condition may be and whether he needs urgent medical attention.

Transparent. If the nasal secretion is clear when sneezing and blowing your nose, there is nothing to worry about. This mucus consists of water mixed with proteins, antibodies and dissolved salts. It is produced by the body around the clock and usually moves imperceptibly from the throat to the stomach, where it is further processed.

White. Usually the white color of the secretion is a sign of inflammation of the nasal mucosa and may indicate a cold. Also in this case, it becomes less liquid, forms lumps.

Yellow. Yellow mucus from the nose indicates that the cold is progressing. When a virus invades the body, the immune system sends white blood cells to fight it. Having done their job, they are usually excreted through the mucous membrane – hence the yellowish color of the sputum.

Green. If the painful condition is prolonged and the nasal secretion turns green, this is a potentially dangerous sign. A person with such sputum should consult a doctor, because green mucus usually indicates inflammation, bacterial infection. You should contact a doctor as soon as possible if you also have a fever or nausea.

Red or brown. Mucus of this shade “says” that for some reason the nasal mucosa has become inflamed or injured. Most often, the appearance of blood in the mucus does not have dangerous causes, but it is better to be safe than sorry, so it would be better to consult a doctor.

Black. A very dark color of mucus indicates that a person may be suffering from a fungal infection. Usually this occurs due to a severe weakening of the immune system, so you should consult a doctor as soon as possible for a preventive examination.
