Diet is associated with the risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with an increased risk of Crohn's disease (CD) associated with a Western diet and an increased risk of ulcerative colitis (UC).
Vira Peters of the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, and her colleagues, analyzed 125,445 participants, of whom 224 and 97 developed VC and HC, respectively, during a maximum follow-up period of 14 years. Posterior dietary patterns were obtained using principal component analysis (PCA), and a priori dietary scores were calculated.
Researchers identified five dietary patterns using PCA. A higher probability of developing CD was observed in connection with a pattern characterized by high consumption of snacks, ready meals, soft drinks and sauces and low consumption of vegetables and fruits (odds ratio 1.16).
Increased probability of development ulcerative colitis was observed in connection with the consumption of red meat, poultry and processed meat (odds ratio 1.11). An association was observed between a high quality diet (LifeLines Diet Score) and a reduced risk of both (odds ratio 0.95).
“Our study highlights the importance of assessing dietary patterns to help prevent CHD already at the population level in overall, and focus research on strategies based on whole foods and complex diets for patients with CAD,” the authors write.
