The doctor named the sign of high blood pressure

Hypertension is one of the causes of serious medical emergencies, such as heart attacks and strokes.

The eyes are known as the “window to the soul,” but they can also give us some clues about our health. Bloodshot eyes are an example of this. While they may simply be an indicator of fatigue or allergies, they could be a sign of something much more serious.

The doctor warns that bloodshot eyes are one of the symptoms of high blood pressure.

“High blood pressure means your heart is working harder than usual to pump blood throughout your body. Over time, this can lead to damage to blood vessels and vital organs,” says the internist.

For this reason, it can lead to potentially fatal medical conditions such as heart attacks and strokes, earning it the reputation of the “silent killer”.

Many people have no symptoms of high blood pressure, making it even more deadly. However, if left untreated for a long time, it can cause some characteristic symptoms.

“Symptoms of vision loss may not appear for many years. But eventually, high blood pressure can lead to hypertensive retinopathy, damage to the blood vessels that causes blurred vision or vision loss.”

Bloodshot eyes are an indicator of hypertensive retinopathy because it can lead to rupture of blood vessels in your own eyes.

“The blood vessels in the retina can become a little stiffer and hardened. They will press against each other and cross over like two hoses in a confined space. When it gets really bad, we will see some of the blood vessels start to leak, we will see bleeding. And that can cause a number of vision problems.”

Hypertensive retinopathy can also make you more vulnerable to the risks associated with high blood pressure.

One scientific study found that among 2,900 participants with high blood pressure, those with “mild” hypertensive retinopathy had a 35 percent increased risk of stroke. And in patients with “moderate or severe” hypertensive retinopathy, the risk was 137 percent higher.

Other possible signs of hypertension include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Nosebleeds
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches.

If you experience symptoms or are concerned about your blood pressure, you should see your doctor.

You are more at risk of developing high blood pressure if you are overweight, smoke, drink a lot of alcohol, are over 65, don’t exercise enough, don’t eat enough fruits or vegetables, or have a relative with high blood pressure.
