The thymus gland was found an important organ that contributes to a healthy pregnancy. It prevents miscarriage and gestational diabetes in women.
This conclusion was reached by an international research group led by the University of British Columbia.
Scientists have discovered a significant role of this organ both in the control of metabolic processes and in immunity during pregnancy.
Female reproductive hormones systems trigger changes in the thymus gland, also known as the thymus, which is the central organ of the immune system. During pregnancy, the thymus produces T-regulatory cells (Tregs), which help the body to overcome the changes that have occurred without harming the body.
The role of the RANK receptor, which is expressed in the gland, was also determined. Thus, in its absence, the mice had a reduced formation of T-regulatory cells in the thymus and, therefore, there were fewer of them in the placenta, which caused a greater number of miscarriages.
As for the development of diabetes in pregnant women, it is normal regulatory T cells enter the mother's fat tissue to prevent inflammation and help control glucose levels in the body. Pregnant animals lacking the RANK receptor had elevated glucose and insulin levels.
Deficiency of Tregs during pregnancy also had long-term effects on the offspring. The mice were prone to diabetes and obesity throughout life. Administration of T-regulatory cells to RANK-deficient individuals corrected all health problems, including miscarriage and maternal glucose levels, and normalized the body weight of the pups.
Researchers also analyzed women with gestational diabetes, finding a reduced number of Tregs in their placenta, as in the animal study.
