This is what happens to your body if you give up alcohol for a month

What is the effect on the body, metabolism and well-being?
Abstinence from alcohol: this is what one day will bring
Unless you start your alcohol-free day with a real hangover the night before, you will not notice any physical changes as a result of mini-abstinence. However, this is not a sign of the beginning of addiction, but simply a break with a pleasant everyday habit.
“For people with normal drinking habits, the following is true: anyone who can easily do without alcohol two days a week is not addicted,” says the therapist.
Doctors recommend regular short-term moderation in any case, especially for a more conscious approach to a potentially addictive substance.
However, if you constantly think about not being allowed to have a non-alcoholic day or you have to try very hard not to get an alcoholic drink in the evening at the nearest gas station – you should seriously reconsider your consumption.
Because alcohol already plays a dominant role in everyday life and the border of addiction is close.
Someone who previously consumed alcoholic beverages daily may notice the first physical changes in the first few days, which become even more noticeable after two weeks:
- better and deeper sleep
- increased productivity.
If the liver is relieved of the load by abstaining from alcohol, it immediately breaks down the accumulated fats. Triglycerides decrease in just a few days, cholesterol levels take longer. But generally speaking, our liver recovers surprisingly quickly,” explains Arsenyeva.
What does a month without alcohol mean
“Studies have shown that after 31 days without alcohol, participants not only had better control over their drinking behavior, but also had more energy, better skin, and less weight.”
The therapist adds:
- An overworked liver is tiring. As a result, those who avoid alcohol are more alert, healthier, and more productive.
- Alcohol interferes with cellular metabolism, causing swelling and lymph congestion. Those who avoid alcohol experience firmer contours and smoother skin.
- Alcohol is full of empty calories. If you avoid two 200-calorie servings a day, you will save 12,000 calories in 30 days: a (theoretical) weight loss of almost two kilograms.
Abstinence from alcohol: that's one year
- The liver is as good as new. Even serious liver damage caused by alcohol can be reversed by completely abstaining from it.
- The entire metabolism, including the digestion and fat burning processes, proceeds faster. Combined with increased productivity through improved sleep and greater activity through improved fitness, the result is an optimized body feel.
- If you typically drink two drinks a day, you could lose 20 pounds in a year of abstinence just from the calories you save.
