Many people are used to believing that folk medicine is safe, although often ineffective. But doctors warn that such self-medication can cause great harm.
It is believed that folk remedies help to recover, recipes for various herbal tinctures have been passed down from elders since time immemorial. Remember how in childhood, when you fell from a slide or a bicycle, your grandmother would say: “apply a leaf of plantain, the wound will heal.” But modern medicine is categorically against such self-medication.
Plantain is a common plant, it can be found almost everywhere. However, experts do not recommend placing it on an open wound, especially in a dirty form. To get any benefit from it, first wash the wound, then chop the leaf itself. The resulting gruel can be applied to the wound. Again, a plant that grows near the road will do more harm than good due to the content of heavy metals in it.
Another tradition is to apply oil to the burned area. It is believed that the film that forms will help healing. What do doctors say about this?
– Under no circumstances should you smear a burn with oil. This creates a greenhouse effect, which causes thermal damage to the deeper layers of the dermis, – explains therapist Elizaveta Kinskaya. – Such a wound will heal longer.
Nettle tinctures for treating feet. When varicose veins and joint pain occur, many people apply this extract to their skin. But it is also harmful!
– If you use nettle tincture internally, it can cause a stomach burn. When rubbed into the skin, the same thing happens. In addition, nettle can cause an allergic reaction. I would like to note that the benefits of such infusions are greatly overestimated, – explains the doctor.
