What drinks are incompatible with vitamins and medicines

Tea, coffee, alcoholic beverages and probiotics can destroy beneficial properties of vitamins, minerals and antibiotics.

In an interview, nutritional consultant Shauna Wilkinson explained why they should be excluded when taking any medication.

Warm tea and coffee

Heat destroys nutrients, so hot water in tea and coffee should not be used while taking vitamins and other beneficial supplements. Tannins and caffeine can interfere with the absorption of some vitamins and minerals, especially iron and vitamin D. In addition, caffeine has a diuretic effect, which can cause B vitamins and vitamin C to be flushed out of the body with fluid.

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol while taking vitamin supplements prevents the body from absorbing the necessary nutrients. B vitamins are most at risk of depletion, and those who drink a lot of alcohol are most likely to be deficient in this element. The combination of alcohol and antibiotics can cause dizziness and drowsiness. In more serious cases, nausea and vomiting are possible.

Probiotics

Adding probiotics to the diet is good for the intestines. However, taking drinks with probiotics can reduce the effectiveness of antibiotics. Because both are bacteria, they can “kill” each other, Wilkinson says. Therefore, there should be a break of at least two hours between taking antibiotics and probiotics (for example, drinkable yogurt).
