What to do if your eyes water

Eyes can water for various reasons. Specialists distinguish between two types of lacrimation: hypersecretory (caused by excessive lacrimation) and retention (caused by a violation of the tear drainage process itself, the amount of lacrimal fluid is usually normal). In each case, depending on the cause, appropriate treatment will be required. Therefore, the first thing to do if the eyes water for a long time or regularly is to consult a doctor. He will find out the cause and prescribe treatment.

Frequent causes of tearing

Excessive production of tear fluid can be caused by a wide variety of factors. Among the most common:

  • allergy;
  • inflammatory diseases of the eyes (for example, conjunctivitis or keratitis);
  • irritation of the conjunctiva or cornea of the eye ( chemical, mechanical or light);
  • acute respiratory diseases.

In all these cases, treatment of the underlying disease must be started as soon as possible.

Hypersecretory lacrimation can be caused by a violation of the outflow of tear fluid due to narrowing or obstruction of the lacrimal ducts. This is usually surgically removed.

Another reason for watery eyes is age-related changes. In old age, the skin under the eyes begins to sag, and the lower eyelid droops, as a result of which the opening of the lacrimal duct moves in relation to the eyeball. Treatment of such tearing should be carried out taking into account the causes of the occurrence and development of the process, experts warn.

What else can help if the eyes water

If the eyes water, the doctor can prescribe special drops after the examination.

If the cause is “dry” eyes or epithelial defects, the use of “artificial tear” type drops can reduce lacrimation.

In the case of acquired obstruction of the nasolacrimal duct, the therapeutic effect can provide irrigation of the nasolacrimal canal.

In any case, an ophthalmologist should recommend measures.
