It's not always possible to control what you say during an important conversation. But it's very important when talking to management, colleagues, at interviews, or in other important situations. Some phrases can quickly show your insecurity, weaken your arguments, and create the wrong impression about you.
What's wrong with the phrase “I don't know”
According to a speech therapist and trainer, the phrase “I don’t know” can devalue you during a conversation. And it can ruin the impression of you in one second.
This phrase can ruin any, even the most confident and status-based speech. And, unfortunately, many of us use it every day, says Pavlo Matsopa.
He explained that, firstly, it creates the impression that you are incompetent or not interested in the topic.
Secondly, it closes the conversation, leaving no room for discussion or finding a solution.
And thirdly, this phrase undermines your confidence, even if you have thoughts or information that could be voiced.
How to replace this phrase
The expert advises using the following words in the conversation:
“I'm not sure yet, but I can clarify”
“Interesting question! Let's try to find the answer together”
“I'll think about it and give you an answer tomorrow” (And be sure to keep your word!)
If you use “I don't know” as a connection, then simply replace it with a pause. Pause, think about your words, and only then give an example or continue your thought.
