Why can't you leave the hosta without pruning for the winter

Why do you need to cut the leaves

The hosta is not left to grow, because the frosts severely damage the leaves. It bends to the ground, loses density, and at the same time covers pests. They will only be happy about such a development. We are talking about slugs and aphids.

Experts explained that hostas do not need leaves for the winter. It will not help her to protect herself from low temperatures. Therefore, you can safely cut it.

If the leaves on the hosta bushes remain until spring itself. It will start to rot. When you pull it out, there is a big risk of damaging the new spring shoots.

Cutting hosta is quite simple. Leave small stumps from the stems. A height of 2-3 cm will be sufficient. If a snowless winter is forecast, mulch it. Various materials can be used for this. For example, bark, straw, compost, grass clippings have proven themselves well.

When you cover the hosta, mark the place with it. This will help protect it from accidental trampling in the spring.
