Why do my eyes get dark when I get up from the couch?

Many are familiar with the feeling of dizziness and darkening in the eyes when getting up abruptly from bed. According to Harvard Medical School doctor Stephen Jurashek, this effect is due to a rapid decrease in blood pressure.

In a conversation with the scientific portal LiveScience, the specialist explained that dizziness, loss of balance and darkness in the eyes is postural or orthostatic hypotension. This condition occurs due to a rapid change in body position. When you get up from the couch, blood quickly flows from the upper body to the legs. As a result, blood pressure drops for a few minutes.

However, if such conditions occur too often and last more than two or three minutes, you should consult a doctor. According to Yuraszek, this may be a sign of thyroid disease, low blood sugar, or arrhythmia.

If your blood pressure decreases throughout the day, you should consider consulting a specialist. The lowest is considered to be a pressure of less than 90 mm Hg. Sudden hypotension can signal internal bleeding.
