Why it's better to avoid drying clothes indoors: unexpected conclusions from experts
0
Over the centuries, many inventions have been made that help keep our clothes clean. However, despite the progress of technology, not every family has been able to purchase clothes drying equipment, although those who are more fortunate can hang clothes to dry in the open areas of their homes. Unfortunately, the habit of hanging clothes inside houses, especially in closed rooms, can cause health problems. This leads to an increase in indoor humidity levels, creating an environment conducive to respiratory diseases.
Why you shouldn't dry clothes indoors
Studies conducted by the Glasgow Institute of Environmental Architecture have concluded that this habit is highly likely to cause asthma, rhinitis, respiratory infections and allergies.
The level of humidity concentration can be very high, and in combination with low temperatures, a favorable environment is created for the appearance and reproduction of mites, mold and fungi.
Few people know that by hanging wet clothes in the house, they add about two liters of water to their premises, which increases the humidity level in closed rooms by more than 30%. For example, in winter it is usually above 50%, if we add clothes hung to dry to this, we will create an atmosphere with a humidity level above 80%, which is quite harmful.
Dr. Veronica Lopez, from the allergy service at Sanitas CIMA Hospital, said that people who are sensitive to mites or mold develop diseases such as rhinitis and asthma in similar conditions. Studies have shown that people with low immunity are prone to fungal infections, which in the long term can cause pulmonary aspergillosis with very serious consequences.
Recommendations
If your home is not equipped with a place to dry laundry or you do not have a special dryer, you can follow some of these recommendations:
- Place items of clothing on the clothesline at some distance from each other to facilitate the circulation of more air flow.
- Clothing should be wrung out as thoroughly as possible.
- Turn items made of thick fabrics inside out. This will reduce drying time.
- Only use a hair dryer for small items such as socks or underwear.
In countries with cold climates, 9 out of 10 people suffer from respiratory diseases, and most of them live in homes where wet clothes are dried. Therefore, it is better to avoid such practices and protect your health.
