2 character traits were associated with an accelerated decline in cognitive functions

Scientists discovered , that one of the factors that can influence the development of dementia is the presence of two certain character traits in a person. Experts associated increased nervousness and low conscientiousness with an accelerated decline in cognitive functions.

Increased nervousness is characterized by constant anxiety, while conscientiousness means being highly disciplined and organized. According to psychiatrist David A. Merrill, constant stress can lead to an increase in cortisol levels in the body. And this, he says, causes faster brain shrinkage, which has been linked to Alzheimer's risk.

People who have symptoms of cognitive decline, such as poor memory, can still lead a normal life. life and perform daily activities. The same cannot be said about dementia patients. It is noted that about 12-18% of people aged 60 and older have mild cognitive impairment. At the same time, approximately 10-15% of them develop dementia. Scientists wanted to understand whether certain character traits can influence the acceleration of the decline of brain functions and the development of dementia.

For this, specialists conducted a study, studying the data of almost 2,000 elderly people. Determination of the participants' cognitive status took place in three stages. First, the level of brain function disorders was measured taking into account 19 tests. At the second stage, a neuropsychologist conducted a blind assessment of the degree of deterioration. After that, an experienced doctor personally examined the participants.

As a result, the scientists found that participants with a higher level of conscientiousness had a 22% lower risk of cognitive impairment. Thus, low levels of conscientiousness have a negative impact on brain health. In addition, participants with high levels of nervousness were 12% more likely to develop problems with thinking, memory and cognition, according to the study.

The study authors note that people with high levels of conscientiousness and low levels of nervousness have in reserve for more years before the expected onset of dementia. For example, for an 80-year-old person, these character traits increase life without cognitive impairment by two years.
