According to Harvard Health, eating spicy and fatty foods before bed can be two causes of sleep disturbances. Spicy foods have been shown to worsen the condition of the stomach lining, causing stomach upset and discomfort.
One line of evidence has shown that the concentration of capsaicin in spicy foods can raise body temperature, which is known to interfere with sleep. Some studies have also shown that spicy foods can disrupt sleep, causing nightmares.
Harvard Health warns: “Spicy foods can contribute to painful heartburn.”
Health organization , also notes that while large meals may induce sleepiness, they should not be misinterpreted as a means of improving sleep.
“Large meals may cause the discomfort of satiety and over time may contribute to obesity, a well-known factor the risk of sleep apnea,” he adds.
Instead, he advises “to have dinner at least a couple of hours before bedtime and prepare a light lunch.”
“Avoid spicy, fatty food, and also alcohol and caffeine. Also, don't drink too much liquid before bed. Having to constantly get up to go to the bathroom can also disrupt your sleep.”
Eating fatty foods can be just as bad for sleep, as dietary fats take a long time to digest.
