High blood cholesterol is a prerequisite for a potentially fatal health hazard.
If your doctor has told you that you have high cholesterol, it is in your best interest to “be more careful” with your diet.
Those with high cholesterol should avoid liver and offal. Both liver and offal are very rich sources of cholesterol, which can increase blood fat levels. Although liver can be considered healthy due to its high vitamin content and low saturated fat content, consuming it can lead to health problems. Not controlling your cholesterol levels puts you at risk of a heart attack or stroke.
All animal products contain some cholesterol. However, this does not mean that people with high cholesterol should switch to a vegetarian diet.
To control cholesterol levels, the best eating plan is a heart-healthy diet. The dietitian advises people to “eat lots of fruit, vegetables and plant-based foods.” Fresh, frozen, canned and dried options all count towards your five-a-day recommendation.
“Vegetables, legumes (such as peas, beans and lentils), fruit, nuts, seeds and whole grains are packed with nutrients and are good for your cholesterol and your heart. Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day (about a handful of each) to stay healthy and eat fewer calories.”
It is also recommended to consume a variety of protein sources, which can include:
- Peas
- Beans
- Lentils
- Fish
- Nuts
- Chicken
- Lean red meat
While animal products contain cholesterol, it is more important to be aware of the saturated fat content. Eating fatty foods can eventually clog your arteries, which can lead to heart disease and other conditions.
