2 unpleasant sensations when urinating that signal cancer

Cancer is a complex disease associated with a large number of clinical manifestations, many of which manifest in the toilet.
Researchers have made huge strides forward in improving the diagnosis and treatment of cancer, and increasing public awareness of the signs has been key to this progress. Some forms of cancer are characterized by changes in the color or consistency of urine. Less commonly, sensations during urination are also manifested.
The most common symptom of bladder cancer is blood in the urine, known as hematuria, Express reports.
About 80 out of 100 people with bladder cancer have blood in their urine.
Changes in frequency or urgency of urination have also been reported in many cases. Less commonly, patients complain of pain and burning when urinating, but much more often these symptoms are caused by other conditions.
For example, symptoms such as bad-smelling urine usually indicate a bacterial cause, not cancer. Often, the underlying cause of burning when urinating is a bacterial urinary tract infection, especially if there is no blood in the urine.
Alternatively, however, the symptoms may be caused by the growth of cancer cells in the lining of the bladder. Urination can irritate cells that have clumped together to form tumors in the bladder.
“A burning sensation when urinating can be a less common sign of bladder cancer, so it’s important to watch for other symptoms.”
Patients also report:
- Frequent urination
- Feeling the need to urinate many times during the night
- Feeling the need to urinate but not being able to urinate
- Lower back pain on one side of the body
It’s important to see a doctor right away if you experience burning or pain, unless it really has a more serious cause.
“Talk to your doctor if you experience pain or burning when urinating, especially if you also notice blood in your urine.”
