According to the University of Wisconsin, these dietary changes may be the key to longevity.
Professor Walter Longo of the University of Wisconsin says that a diet high in plant carbohydrates, eating less protein and fasting are three ways that a person can extend its life. Longo calls his technique the Longevity Diet, with an emphasis not on weight loss but on slowing aging.
The Longevity Diet recommends people get 30 percent of their daily calories from healthy fats, such as nuts, olive oil and fish.
The diet is part of a growing trend to replace processed foods with whole foods and plants amid research suggesting switching to a plant-based diet could add 10 years to a person's life.
