Studies convincingly prove the need to replace simple carbohydrates with complex ones.
Sight, without a doubt, is one of the most valuable senses. Unfortunately, what you put into your body can put this precious asset at risk. A doctor warns that three popular food groups can cause vision loss.
People are often surprised by how much diet can affect vision.
Between a busy work schedule and trying to get some rest on the weekends, you you may prefer fast over healthy when it comes to making your grocery list.
Some popular foods may not be so easy on the eyes.
“There are many connections between what you eat and drink and how quickly your vision deteriorates.”
Simple carbohydrates
From milk to pasta, simple carbohydrates are hidden in many popular foods.
Simple carbohydrates have been linked to a higher risk of age-related macular degeneration, which can potentially lead to vision loss. This is especially true for people with diabetes.
The reason these tasty but dangerous foods can put your eyes at risk is because they are digested too quickly, causing a spike in blood sugar levels.
Sugar
Also classified as a carbohydrate, sugar can be just as taxing on your eyes if you eat too much.
“Sugar, as well as sugary drinks, increase the risk of diabetic retinopathy, which, if left unchecked, can lead to retinal detachment and vision loss,” the doctor added.
Meat
Processed meats are also worth watching out for, as they contain high amounts of salt, which can cause hypertension-related retinopathy, a disease of the retina (the back of the eye).
