A nutritionist recommends adding eye-healthy ingredients to your shopping cart to prevent problems ranging from cataracts to age-related macular degeneration.
Orange is the new green when it comes to eye-healthy diets. Orange, pink, and red foods top the list of foods to eat to protect your eyes.
“Good nutrition helps keep our bodies functioning optimally. Eye health and vision are such an important part of our health that people often neglect,” says a nutritionist.
To improve your eyesight and protect it from unwanted problems, the expert recommended adding these three “best” ingredients to your weekly menu.
1. Salmon
Salmon, characterized by its buttery, rich flavor, offers more than just a serving of protein.
According to a nutritionist, the fish is rich in omega-3 fatty acids and astaxanthin, which may help reduce the risk of eye diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, dry eye syndrome, and cataracts.
“Given that salmon is rich in omega-3s and astaxanthin, it's an ideal eye-healthy protein to add to a meal. If salmon isn't your thing, other great sources of astaxanthin include trout or shrimp, and omega-3 fatty acids are also found in mackerel, sardines, walnuts, and chia seeds,” advises the doctor.
2. Orange Vegetables
Both orange peppers and sweet potatoes get their orange pigment from a phytochemical antioxidant called beta-carotene. However, these treats do more than just turn vegetables orange.
Your body converts beta-carotene into vitamin A, which is essential for maintaining healthy vision. Additionally, according to the expert, it is linked to a lower risk of developing AMD, cataracts, and diabetic retinopathy.
3. Tomatoes
“Juicy foods contain another antioxidant-rich pigment called lycopene, which also helps reduce the risk of cataracts.”
We all know how beneficial a balanced diet made up of nutritious foods can be for our overall well-being, but many of us don’t realize the positive effect it can also have on the health of our eyes and the long-term outlook for our vision.
So incorporating eye-healthy ingredients into your diet can be really beneficial.
Other important lifestyle factors include exercise, getting enough sleep and, of course, having regular eye exams at least once every two years to help you monitor changes in your vision and check your overall eye health.
