3 symptoms of deep vein thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis is one of the most popular complications of improper functioning of the circulatory system. Gel-like blood clots clog the bloodstream, which can cause numbness in the limbs and a worsening of the general condition. The main risk is that such blood clots can break off and block the heart channel through which blood flows.

Phlebologist, Professor Mark Whiteley, said that three main symptoms indicate the presence of deep vein thrombosis (DVT):

  • pain in the calves;
  • swelling or edema of the legs;
  • change in the color of the legs.

Others may be added to these signs, but they will depend on the location of the blood clot. For example, if it is located in the lower leg, the patient notes calf pain. If the blood clot is above the knee, there is general pain in the leg. With complete blockage of the vein, swelling of the ankles and lower legs appears. In advanced cases, the leg may change color, becoming pale with a bluish tint.

Doctor Whiteley advised to immediately consult a doctor if such symptoms occur.
