3 unexpected foods that contain gluten

Gluten, or gluten, is a complex protein that is found mainly in wheat, rye, barley, and (in smaller quantities) in oats. In fact, it is contraindicated only for people who suffer from celiac disease (gluten intolerance), but in the wake of dietary trends in the last 5 years, people without this disease are also refusing it. There is a widespread belief that gluten interferes with normal digestion and causes various health problems. Everyone knows that some cereals contain gluten. However, there are a few products where we don't expect to see it.

Soy sauce

It would seem that soybeans do not contain gluten, where does it come from? However, unless you make your own soy sauce at home (which is unlikely), you do not know what may be in it. Wheat is often added to the sauce to give it a pleasant consistency and presentation. If you decide to order sushi, it is better to buy your own soy sauce (after reading the label and making sure that there is no wheat in the composition), rather than using the one that comes with your order.

Cheese

In general, there is no gluten in dairy products and cannot be, so if you buy homemade cheese, there is nothing to worry about. But excessive concern about the figure can go awry. Low-fat cheeses (or completely fat-free) often have additional ingredients added, which may include wheat. This is done to improve the taste and appearance of the product. The same applies to blue cheese. So be careful.

Chocolate bars

Here is another unexpected turn of events. The amount of added sugar in your favorite “Snickers” is unlikely to be a surprise to you, but the possible gluten content will definitely be. In order for the bar to maintain its appetizing appearance and shape, a huge number of ingredients are added to it, among which may be a product containing gluten. In addition, gluten particles can get there accidentally. Conscientious manufacturers usually write on the label that “the product may contain traces of gluten”, but unfortunately we cannot be certain of the honesty of all manufacturers.
