When you compromise on the value of your list shopping, you don't have to sacrifice your health either.
While there is no secret recipe for extending life, one key approach to longevity is preventing precursors to chronic disease. From a lower risk of stroke to a reduced risk of heart disease, some cheap foods do it with gusto.
While it's no secret that colorful fruits and vegetables and fiber-rich legumes are among the healthiest foods, these longevity products can often hit your wallet hard.
“Contrary to what we often hear, eating healthy doesn't have to be expensive. You can cook a lot of healthy meals on a small budget, while prolonging your life,” says nutritionist Vasylyna Ponomaryova.
The expert listed some of the cheapest products that you can buy in British supermarkets and also prolong your life for several years.
Frozen fruits and vegetables
“Daily consumption of three portions of vegetables and two portions of fruit is associated with a lower risk of premature death.”
What's more, the freezing process doesn't rob colorful, nutritious foods of any health benefits.
Potatoes
While cheese chips won't do your arteries any good, there's no need to completely give up potatoes. The starchy vegetable contains potassium, which nutritionists say can lower your risk of stroke and prolong your life.
Rice
“According to the Blue Zones (regions of the world , where people live longer), 65 percent of their diet consists of rice, making it one of the healthiest and cheapest foods.”
Whole wheat pasta flour
Whole wheat pasta is rich in fiber, and regular fiber consumption is associated with a lower risk of cardiovascular disease, which in turn reduces the risk of death.
