5 glasses of this drink per week accelerates aging

Towards the end of the week, many have the temptation to drink a glass of alcohol to relax after a long day at work. On weekends, when work is far from the minds of many, a larger amount may be consumed. However, while this provides short-term relief, its long-term effects can be disastrous for longevity.

For generations, scientists and doctors have tried to slow the aging process and understand what role certain factors play. Alcohol is one such factor, and the role it plays is significant.

According to a study, just five glasses of wine a week can accelerate aging.

Alcohol begins to affect the body's DNA by damaging a portion of the strands known as telomeres.

Why is this damage important?

Previous studies have linked telomere damage to an increased risk of neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.

The conclusions were made after scientists analyzed the length of these telomeres in laboratory conditions. Despite the frightening nature of the research results, there is one caveat. The study found no link between alcohol consumption and biological aging below the 17 unit mark.

This finding suggests that a minimal amount of alcohol is required to damage telomeres.

“A similar relationship with alcohol have been described for other health consequences.”

Shortened telomeres have been suggested as risk factors that may cause a number of serious age-related diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
