This vegetable is in the kitchen of every Ukrainian. Although it does not have the same medicinal effect as garlic, onions are still very useful for health.
Antioxidant.Onions are packed with plant chemicals, including flavonoids, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. They protect against chronic diseases such as diabetes and even cancer. Onions contain more than 25 different flavonoids and sulfur-containing substances.
Heart. The flavonoid quercetin in onions has anti-inflammatory effects and promotes heart health. Eating onions reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases by reducing blood pressure and cholesterol.
Bones.The inclusion of onions in the diet is associated with an improvement in bone mineral density. Onions are rich in antioxidants that reduce oxidative stress, which reduces bone loss. This assumption was confirmed in a study involving pre- and post-menopausal women.
Intestines. Onions contain fiber that is digested very slowly or not at all. It supports intestinal health. Indigestible prebiotic fibers are used as fuel for the “good” bacteria living in our intestines, which produce byproducts called short-chain fatty acids. And they are important for maintaining the health and integrity of the intestines and immunity.
Bacteria. People use onions to treat coughs, colds, and runny noses. It has valuable bactericidal properties against intestinal and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as staphylococcus. The longer onions are stored, the more useful they are. Quercetin is of particular value, as it inhibits the growth of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Helicobacter pylori.
