Thinning hair can be very frustrating, especially if you know you're at risk for male pattern baldness.
A genetically determined condition of hair loss doesn't have to be inevitable. There are ways to help suppress the androgen hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which can otherwise damage hair follicles.
If you're losing your hair and starting to develop bald spots or bald patches, the culprit is likely a combination of your genetics and the effects of DHT on your hair. Currently, the most effective way to prevent hair loss is to block DHT with the prescription hair loss medication finasteride. Some research also suggests that certain foods and supplements can lower DHT levels.
One of the first ingredients you might want to add to your cooking is turmeric.
While there’s no evidence that turmeric affects hair growth, some early research suggests that it may affect DHT. Daily consumption of curcumin (a powerful antioxidant found in turmeric) has been shown to reduce DHT levels in mice.
Another promising area of research suggests that soy protein, found in soybeans, may help lower DHT levels in the body.
Lauric acid, a substance found in coconut oil, may – in combination with other ingredients – affect the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Another ingredient to consider when dealing with hair loss is green tea.
Some studies have shown that pumpkin seed oil, cold-pressed from pumpkin seeds, may help prevent hair loss and stimulate hair growth.
