5 “secrets” that will help increase the number of berries on currants

Currant can be called a “folk” berry, which grows in many people's plots. And who is really happy with the harvest? Currant only seems like a plant that does not need care. There are 5 tricks that will help to significantly increase the yield.
Timely watering
Many summer residents are used to the fact that currants do not need watering. Of course, it is enough to do this only 3 times during the season, but there are peculiarities.
The plant needs moisture during the growth of shoots. If the humidity is not enough, the number of shoots will begin to decrease.
The second watering is carried out during the appearance of berries. If the land is dry during these periods, there is absolutely no reason to expect a good harvest. The third irrigation is carried out when the crop is harvested, and almost no one does this third time.
5 tsebs of warm water should be poured per square meter of the barrel circle. It is important to achieve good complexity. Before watering the receiving circle, it is recommended to make grooves with a depth of 10 centimeters.
Feeding
Many summer residents generally forget about top dressing. A false impression is created that currants can do without fertilizers. There is logic in this, but the lack of fertilizers will directly affect the harvest.
Feeding is recommended 2 times per season. The first fertilizing is applied during the period of appearance of ovaries, the second after fruiting. When applying fertilizers, in no case should the center be watered. It is important to apply in the grooves around the bush.
It is best to feed with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers. You can add potassium sulfate or superphosphate.
Proportions: 1 tablespoon per 1 liter of water. The water should be warm. Some use ash at the rate of 500 grams per bush.
Mulching
The main problem for growth is dry soil. To avoid this, you can perform mulching. For mulch you can use:
- Peat;
- Sawdust;
- Straw;
- Newspapers.
If mulch is used, it is important to remember preventive treatment against bugs and other small pests. In mulch, they can actively develop, accordingly delaying the fight is unacceptable.
Protection from frost
There are currant varieties that can withstand severe frosts. But with prolonged frosts, the buds may freeze, and this will negatively affect the fruiting of currants.
It is good if a lot of snow fell in winter. And here the currant will be protected in a natural way. In other cases, care should be taken to protect against frost. To protect the bushes from severe frosts, you can spray them with water or use fumigation.
Bees are needed in the garden
If there are no bees on the site, you can forget about a good harvest. Currants are demanding on pollination.
Attracting bees is not so difficult, it is enough to spray the branches with sweet water. You can add a tablespoon of honey to a liter of water. This technique can be used for other fruit trees on the site.
You can also plant plants that attract bees, including:
- Asters.
- Hyacinth.
- Peonies.
- Helenium.
- Honeysuckle and others.
Flowers should be planted in sunny areas, protected from strong wind.
